Allan August Kirwan

Allan A. Kirwan, former mayor of Avondale Estates, died Saturday evening, October 16, 2021 at age 76. Mr. Kirwan was an Avondale mover and shaker for decades.

From the Avondale Swim and Tennis Club to the Mayor of Avondale Estates, Mr. Kirwan served the city he loved in many ways. He founded and co-chaired the Avondale Chamber of Commerce and the Avondale Community Chest. He served on several committees planning the future of the city and its downtown area. He chaired Avondale’s Annexation Committee and its Cultural Affairs Foundation. He founded the city’s Film Commission and Avondale Community Action. He co-chaired Habitat for Humanity - Avondale. During the Atlanta Olympic games, he and Howard Osofsky co-led the Avondale Estates Polish Coordinating Committee. He even created the first Avondale Estates 4th of July fireworks display.

During his work for the city, Mr. Kirwan was the full-time executive director of the State Bar of Georgia, where he earned the reputation for being someone who knew how to get things done.

His wife, Diane Pearson Kirwan, predeceased him by several years. He is survived by his brother, John W. Kirwan; his older son, Kevin J. Kirwan, and his wife Lenora Dunn Kirwan; and his younger son, Nathan S. Kirwan. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
