Charity Scott, 71, passed away on Saturday, March 18th, 2023. She was born on May 21, 1951 to Gordon Kendall Scott and Faith Crandall Scott. Part of a family of distinguished academics and
legal scholars, Charity grew up in both Stanford, CA and Westfield, NY, later living in locations as diverse as the small Navajo town of Chinle, AZ; Toulouse, France; and of course, Atlanta, GA. She was awarded a bachelor of arts (BA) in comparative literature
from Stanford University; a juris doctor (JD) from Harvard University; and a master of science in conflict management (MSCM) from Kennesaw State University.
Though initially pursuing careers in both academic editing and legal practice, Charity's true professional passion
was teaching. She taught in the Georgia State University College of Law from 1987 to 2020 and was the founding director of the College's Center for Law, Health, and Society. This health law program has consistently ranked among the top ten programs nationally
since its inception. Charity was also a co-founder of the Health Law Partnership, a medical-legal partnership with the Children's Hospital of Atlanta and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. She was a well-loved and an innovative teacher who brought improvisation
and meditation to legal education.
In addition to her illustrious career, Charity was passionate about her family, travel, and literature. Charity is
survived by her husband, Evans Harrell; her son, Peter Harrell; her daughter-in-law, Meryl Harrell; her grandchildren, Sam and Faith; her son-in-law, Jacob Shreckengost; her daughter, Constance Harrell Shreckengost; and her granddogs, Joule, Virgil, Mimi,
and Tigre.
