Herbert Hightower, age 84 passed suddenly on June 21, 2019. He was born in North Georgia to Byron and Stellar Hightower on August 30, 1934. Born in rural Georgia, his family were sharecroppers farming cotton in Salacoa Georgia. The family moved to Scottdale, Georgia in 1947. He went to work for Scottdale Textile Mills in 1950 where he served as the Plant Manager. He was literally the last employee in the building when the mill closed permanently in 1980. He then worked at DeKalb Medical Center as a mechanical engineer until his retirement in 1999.
He leaves many lifelong friends. He loved his hunting buddies and bowling. He bowled two 300 games in his life, his first at age 68. In May, he and his daughters won their bowling league in Lilburn, Georgia.
His life was full with friends and family and his legacy to all of us is laughter and love. His life stories are rich with details of farming and rural living. He viewed life with a remarkable appreciation of everything. Every meal was the best he had ever eaten. Every day was the best he had ever had.
Herbert is survived by his wife of 24 years, Evelyn Hightower, daughters Wanda Nelson (Scott), Juanita Groover (Phillip) and son Tim Brantley(Cindy). He has six grandchildren, Andrew Groover, Melanie Malone, Tim Brantley, Jr., Cameron Brantley, Kimber Lindstrom and Taylor Sorrows. He also leaves five great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 12:30pm with services beginning at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St Jude's Hospital, American Diabetes Association, and The Wounded Warrior Project (links are available below).
