John Carlos Lockwood, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep Monday October 20, 2014 at his residence in Decatur, Georgia. John was born November 26, 1925, grew up in Potsdam, New York, served in the Navy on the USS San Juan during WWII and graduated from Clarkson College. John worked for GE where he developed locomotive engines and later, for Scripto. He holds over 70 patents including the mechanical pencils and butane lighters. Mr. Lockwood also worked for Georgia Tech Research Institute developing radars and other top secret research projects. He was referred to by his co-workers as a Cold War Techno Agent helping to preserve our freedom. John was a Patent Agent. He was devoted to his family; master of the Gangway, Doorblocker, and Now Hear This; connoisseur of bread and milk, meatloaf, boiled can, and had a passion for anything chocolate; taught us songs that his mother taught him (most not to be sung in public); was the head of dog care for all of us; and the best husband, dad, and Papa in the world. He is survived by his wife, Phoebe Ryerson Lockwood; children, Carol Lockwood Rice (David), Tom Lockwood (Amy), Alan Lockwood, Jim Lockwood, Dorothy Lockwood Dillard (Randy), David Lockwood (Amanda); grandchildren, Ryan Rice (Kelli), Thomas Lockwood, John Rice, Daniel Lockwood, Evangeline Dillard, JP Lockwood, Ruby Dillard, May Dillard, Lolly Lockwood; nieces and nephews, Anne Lockwood LeVan (Jim), Marc LeVan, Richard Lockwood (Julie), Caroline and Will Lockwood, as well as Bonnie Repenhagen, Cathy Barrett, Chris Felix, Lissa Mutchler, Eric Swinebroad, Amy Arnold and their families. A private graveside service for the family will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 11:30 am at Georgia National Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 pm at Clairmont Presbyterian Church with Rev. Owen Stepp officiating. A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
