Louis Witte Benton

October 19, 1937 — January 11, 2016

Louis Witte Benton, Jr., 78, died peacefully in his sleep at home Monday, January 11, 2016. He was born October 19, 1937 in Monticello, GA, the only child of Kathryn Blackwell Benton and Louis Witte Benton, who both preceded him in death. He has been a Director of the Bank of Monticello for many years and maintained an interest in the town and friends there. He attended Emory University and has lived in Atlanta since since 1960. Louis was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church since 1964, where he held many leadership roles and was a charter member of his Hope Sunday School class. After retiring from a successful career in the office furniture business at Carithers-Wallace-Courtenay, he and Ann pursued his interest in wines by traveling with special friends to the wine country of Australia, New Zealand, France, California, Argentina, Chile, and recently Portugal. All his Hope Class buddies knew Louis loved watching sports on tv: Atlanta Braves, Falcons, GA Bulldogs, Duke basketball. Dinner at favorite 30A restaurants near Seaside was something he looked forward to. He loved nature, like his parents, and deer hunting in Jasper County. He took special delight in his precious grandchildren. He spoke every day of his appreciation for his wife, his family, his home, his church, and his friends. Louis was a gentleman. He set a high mark for integrity, honesty, fairness, faithfulness, generosity, and selflessness. Louis "never needed anything", but gave freely to others. He was a dear sweet man and his presence, smile, and gentle spirit will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ann Rankin Benton; daughter Mona Lutz (Matt) of Calais, VT, son Trey Benton (Laura) of Louisville, KY, grandchildren Katie Benton, Dylan Lutz and Ella Lutz. Interment will be at 11 AM Thursday, January 14 at Oak Grove Church Cemetery. Dr. Glenn Ethridge and Dr. Amy Morgan will officiate at the memorial service at 2 PM at Oak Grove Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the Parlor following the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Building Fund of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Road, Decatur, GA 30033. A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
