Samuel Whitsett Coney, Iii

Samuel W. Coney, III of Decatur, Ga died Sunday morning October 19, 2008. He was born in Americus Georgia November 25, 1925. He grew up in Columbus and attended Columbus High School. Sam volunteered for the Navy in 1943 as was called to active duty in January 1944. After the war Sam continued his education at Clemson and received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Auburn in 1950. Sam worked his entire career as a Civil Engineer, first for the Georgia Department of Transportation and then for the Federal Highway Commission in Albany, NY. He often worked with FEMA for flood damage assignments. After retiring he returned to Georgia and resided in Decatur. Sam was very active in the community. He was an avid bicyclist for 40 years, and was the oldest member of the Southern Bicycle League at 82 years young. Sam's first job was throwing papers for the Columbus Ledger as a boy, but it wasn't until his forties before cycling became his passion. He regularly cycled to his job in upstate New York even with 5 months of snow. He rarely missed the Saturday ride with his pack here in Decatur. He was a member of the Decatur Presbyterian Church, and active member in the Sunday school and sang for the church choir. He also sang for the Avondale Baptist Church choir. He was a past member of the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church choir He was past Master and Chaplain of the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #41. Sam loved music, cycling, swimming and reading. He was an Eagle Scout as a boy, a Navy veteran, a patriot, a loving and caring husband and father. He survived by his wife of 50+ years Joyce, son Michael, and daughter, Joy Clark and her husband Steve, and granddaughter Valerie of Cumming. He is also survived by son, Samuel W. C Hamlett, IV, his wife Suzie and their daughter Christie. Visitation will be at A. S. Turner & Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, Georgia on Monday October 20 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Services will be held Tuesday October 21 at 3 pm at the Decatur Presbyterian Church. Private services to follow. A. S. Turner & Sons
