Dr. Abdelsalam Hassan Ragab, 79, died peacefully on December 3 at home in Decatur, Ga.
He leaves his wife Dianne Miller Ragab; his daughter, Niveen Licata and husband Dr. Robert Licata; his son Hassan Ragab and wife Sara; and his daughter, Randa Ragab;
Stepson Dr. Chuck Livsey and wife Denise; Stepdaughter Monique Safar and husband Jaber Safar; His grandchildren Trevor Andrusko, Dane Ragab,, Aya Ragab, Bobby Licata, John Licata, Mitch Licata, and Chet Licata, Stefan Livsey, Garrett Livsey, Nolan Livsey, Ali Safar, Jude Safar, Kauther Safar, and Marya Safar, in addition to many cousins and close friends.
Born September 1, 1938 in Alexandria, Egypt to Hassan and Zeinab Ragab. Dr. Ragab came to the United States in 1967, completed his medical training and research first at Washington University in St. Louis and then at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto Canada. He then returned to Washington University in St. Louis from 1971 until 1975. Dr. Ragab came to Atlanta as the first Pediatric Oncologist at Emory University Childrens Hospital, Egleston, where he continued his research and served as the Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology until his retirement in 1997.
Dr. Ragab was the founder of CURE Childhood Cancer, a non profit organization that raises money for childhood cancer research, and remained active until his passing.
In his retirement Dr. Ragab enjoyed sailing, reading, spending time with family and friends, visiting with many past patients, and traveling extensively.
A Funeral Service in memory of Dr. Abdel Ragab will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., at A.S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Rd, Decatur, GA, with Mr. Rick Sauers officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Thursday, December 7 at A.S. Turner in Decatur.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Abdel has touched are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations to CURE childhood cancer.
