Alan Minish Bowker

February 3, 1917 — August 16, 2008

Alan M. Bowker, retired Atlanta businessman and elder emeritus of Druid Hills Presbyterian Church, died Saturday at home in Stone Mountain. He was 91. A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Mr. Bowker attended Teachers College of Connecticut and enlisted in the U. S. Navy after the outbreak of World War II. He served as quartermaster first class aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence during combat in the Pacific. In 1945, he married Esther Eleanor Devine of Philadelphia. They moved in 1961 to Atlanta where they lived together with their 4 children until she died in 1966. In 1967, Mr. Bowker married Margaret Cloud, an Atlanta native, and they moved to Stone Mountain. She died in 1993. After retiring as office manager in Atlanta for Chase Brass and Copper, Mr. Bowker devoted much of his time to Druid Hills Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday school and manned a shelter for the homeless. An avid birdwatcher and hiker, he loved the mountains and waterfalls of his adopted state. He is survived by his two sons, Kirk Alan Bowker of Rochester, NY and Scott Wilson Bowker of Stone Mountain; two daughters, Eleanor Lynn Bowker of New Orleans and Ruth Candace Bowker of Stone Mountain; and one grandson, Alexander Bowker Carter of Paris, France. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 19th at 1:00 P.M. at Druid Hills Presbyterian Church. Interment to follow at FloralHillsMemoryGardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00noon to 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the church.   A. S. Turner & Sons.
