Our beloved father and grandfather Alan Robert Colussy passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023. He was a man that loved the beauty in all things, found the wonder in the world around him, and never missed an opportunity to engage people and life to the fullest.
His life started in a snow storm in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, where he was born on December 26th, 1942 to Arthur and Stella Colussy. He grew up in the same town, going to Bridgeville Public schools and Upper St, Clair H.S. For the majority of his college career, he went to Davis & Elkins College, a small Presbyterian school in Elkins, West Virginia, where he majored in Psychology, minored in art, and met his beloved wife, Susan Colussy.
He lived a varied and exciting life, beginning in college when he taught at a summer art camp for disabled children in the Poconos. Later he worked as a VIP Escort at the General Motors Pavilion at the 1964 NY World's Fair where he met members of the Kennedy and Johnson families, Princesses Grace and Caroline, Red Skelton, and many other celebrities.
He was drafted into the US Army during the VietNam war, serving in Hanau, Germany as a surveyor in the Third Armored Division. While there, he bought the engagement ring with which he proposed to Sue. They were married in Fulton, NY on December 30th, 1967 and moved to Atlanta immediately after. He was briefly involved with a local cosmetic company and then joined Griggs Van Horne, a party and convention decor firm. He subsequently worked for Bailey Banks & Biddle as regional director of visual merchandising, for Tiffany and Co., and the Rouse Company Malls as temporary tenant Director.
In 1994 he joined the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as Marketplace manager for the various Olympic sites for the 1996 games. His pride in serving his city and the institution of the Olympics was evident every time he shared a story of the games and their place in the history of Atlanta. Post retirement he was involved with the Atlanta Jewelry Show.
He and Sue joined Covenant Presbyterian Church in Buckhead in 1968, where he was a member for 55 years. He was a church elder, member of the choir, manager of the flower guild, and never passed up an opportunity to make the church sparkle.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan Colussy, children Alan Colussy II and Kate Colussy-Estes, son-in-law Justin Colussy-Estes, and grandchildren Nora and Price Colussy-Estes, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Art and Mary Lou Colussy, and his sister and her partner, Sally Colussy and Steve Hoffman, his cousin and her husband Susan and Chuck Kozak, and many, many beloved family members in the greater Pittsburgh area. His creativity, joy, and love of life were just terrific, and will be missed by all who knew him.
The memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2461 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta, GA 30305 at 11 AM on Saturday April 1, 2023.
