Albert Y. Badre

April 25, 1912 — October 30, 2010

Dr. Albert Y. Badre, age 98, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2010. Albert was born in a small resort town near Beirut, Lebanon where he lived the first half of his life. He graduated from the American University of Beirut and later from the University of Iowa with a Ph.D. in Economics. He married his childhood sweetheart, Lily Badr, on August 14, 1938. For 25 years he taught at AUB where he became head of the Economics Department and Chairman of the Economic Institute. Together he and Lily raised five children. In 1960 Albert accepted a position with the United Nations as Chief Economic Advisor for the Belgian Congo while his wife and children immigrated to the United States. Albert rejoined his family and resumed his teaching career as Professor of Economics at the University of Iowa from 1963-1966, and at Southern Illinois University from 1966-1973. In 1973 he returned to Beirut as President of Beirut University College (now Lebanese American University) and helped navigate the college through the turbulent Civil War in Lebanon until his retirement to Atlanta, Ga. in 1983 where for the next 10 years he served as a part-time professor at Agnes Scott College. Albert was an international educator, a scholar, a recipient of many awards and honors from governments and associations, a devout Christian and a devoted family man.
He is survived by his wife, Lily, age 95, and by five children and their spouses: Sami, (Janet), Ramsey, (Lillian), Albert Nasib (Barbara), Leila (Mark Schlenker), and Maria; by six grandchildren: Albert Badre, Linda Richardson, Shenon Badre Elsharkawi, David Badre, Hannah Schlenker and Paul Schlenker, and by six great-grandchildren. He will be mourned by relatives of the Badr(e), the Haddad, the Sabra, and the Nemer families and will be missed by many colleagues and students both in Lebanon and the USA.
A memorial service to celebrate Albert's long life of many achievements will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree St. on Sunday, November 21 at 4PM.
