Alice Constant Mills, 96, of Athens, formerly of Avondale Estates, Georgia, died Tuesday, April 28, in Athens. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, on Nov. 7, 1918 to George and Irene Wicks Constant on Nov. 7, 1918. She was the widow of Donald B. Mills, her husband of 45 years who died in 1985. She and her husband moved to Avondale Estates in the late 1950s, after living in New York, California, and Florida.
Mrs. Mills graduated from Jamaica (NY) High School and was a 1940 graduate of Tufts University, with a degree in economics. She worked for the American Red Cross in one of its earliest blood banks but spent most of her life as a homemaker in Avondale Estates. She moved to Athens in 2004. She was an avid swimmer and a dog-lover and enjoyed gardening, travel, and family.
She is survived by her children, Steven Mills of Charlotte, NC, and Linda Grant of Athens, her grand-daughter Elizabeth Grant of Athens, her great-grandsons, Owen and Henry Shalin of Marietta, niece Susan Jennings of Princeton, NJ, and nephew Thomas Constant of Port Jefferson, NY. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her grand-daughter Katherine Grant Shalin and her brothers, Herbert and Richard Constant.
Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery. A memorial service has been scheduled for Friday, June 5 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Decatur.
The family expresses gratitude to neighbors in the Greystone community in Athens and to the staff of the Memory Care Center at Highland Hills Village, for the loving care they provided to Mrs. Mills.
