Alice Coberly Hall died on June 21, 2015 at the age of 93, surrounded by all of her children who loved her dearly. She was born on August 21, 1921, the middle child of Vergil J. Coberly and Alice Dolan Coberly in Petersburg, Virginia, where she grew up with her sister Rosalie (Roe) and brother VJ. Alice followed her sister and attended college at Farmville State College for Women, now Longwood University, and graduated in 1942. Instead of following her intended profession of teaching, Alice took a job at Camp Lee, an Officers' Training base, in Petersburg during World War II. She met her former husband, Robert H. (Bob) Hall, from Soperton, Georgia at Camp Lee. They were married after the war and lived in Charlottesville, Virginia while Bob completed his law degree at the University of Virginia. In 1947 they moved to Atlanta when Bob took a teaching position at Emory University Law School. Their first home was in Emory faculty housing on North Decatur Road. Alice made lifelong friends there who forever referred to their wonderful times at the address they simply called "2080". Alice played bridge for decades with a group of women who started their bridge enterprise there in 1949. Alice loved her family, Virginia roots, and her Catholic Faith. She was an original member of St. Thomas More in Decatur, Georgia. She also loved her friends from Emory and her neighborhood, her children's friends, getting together for cards, and to celebrate any and all occasions including holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries, including a group of women who gathered weekly in the evening later in life for "garbage day". One of her great joys was spending time with Roe, VJ, and their families, which always included singing, dancing and telling family stories. Her love of dancing was fulfilled when she joined up with Bobbie Elzey for dance aerobics and tap dancing classes at Evenings at Emory. She looked forward to the family trips to St. Simons, sitting on the beach into her late 80s under an umbrella so she wouldn't miss the action with children, grandchildren, and the great grandchildren she adored. As an avid follower of the Atlanta Braves, she knew more stats than anyone and enjoyed games at Turner Field. She also became a dedicated UGA football watcher. She was always a rock and touchstone for family and friends. A true lady, she never had an unkind word. Her kindness, warmth and loyalty were ever present through her final days. Alice had a wonderful laugh and a smile for everyone which came from her heart.
In addition to her parents, Alice was predeceased by her dear sister Rosalie Coberly Sommer.
Survivors include brother Vergil Joseph Coberly and his wife Imogene of Roswell, Georgia, daughters Carolyn Coberly Hall of Atlanta and Patti Hall Wilson of Decatur, son Howell A. Hall and his wife Ann Kelley of Atlanta, grandson Austin Wilson and his wife Diana, grandsons Alex Hall and Henry Hall of Atlanta, and great grandchildren Luke Wilson and Lily Wilson, as well as her nieces and nephews and extended Hall family friends.
Her family is grateful for the care she received from the staff of Safe Haven and Crossroads Hospice nursing during her last several weeks. Her family is also grateful for the support of Rita Jones, Marsha Mitchiner, and Chandra and Debra Jennings, with very special thanks for the love and friendship of Tempie Ashe over the years, and to Freeda, Judy, and Gladys for their caring friendship and years of always keeping her hair looking great.
In lieu of flowers, Alice requested that any remembrance be made with a donation to St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Decatur, 636 W. Ponce de Leon Ave, 30030.
