Allen Ray Greene (Ray), 76, of Decatur, Georgia passed away on January 24, 2022 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA with family by his side. Ray was born on November 16, 1945 in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Grace and Tommie Greene. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Tim Greene, daughter Carrie Greene Fuoco (James) and his beloved grandchildren Andrew and Daniel Fuoco.
Ray was proud to be a native Atlantan and loved spending his life living in and around the city. After graduating from Cross Keys High School, he attended Dekalb College and transferred to Georgia Southern University to complete his degree in education. Shortly after graduating from Georgia Southern, he was drafted into the Army and served as a Chaplain’s Assistant. When he was discharged from the military, he worked for Fulton County Children’s Services as a case worker until he decided to return to his teaching roots and pursue a master’s degree in Library Sciences. He spent the next 35 years in the educational system as a Media Specialist with Fulton County Schools and Henry County Schools. Ray was a life-long Presbyterian and ordained elder.
Ray loved traveling with his wife Mary and enjoyed trips to China, Ireland, Alaska and many other sites/cities around the US. His yard, annual garden and home projects were a great source of pride and joy! When he wasn’t in the yard, you could find him volunteering at Emory Presbyterian, St. Andrews Presbyterian Pre-School Library, Sagamore Hills Elementary, and Clifton Night Shelter, making meal bags for parents at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and serving on the Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry (DEAM) Board. But truly his greatest joy was spending time with his grandsons Andrew and Daniel - making science experiment videos, reading them stories, picking them up from school and cheering them on at swim meets, soccer and hockey games.
In lieu of flowers the family will be working with Sagamore Hills Elementary and Annunciation Day School to develop a wish list of books. Ray believed that reading was the gateway to endless possibilities.
