Allene Newberry Eley was the second of eight children born to Bernice and John Newberry in 1922, on a farm outside of Arlington, Georgia. She played high school basketball at Arlington High School, and graduated from Georgia Teachers College. She married Hubert Wayne Eley in 1943 and after he returned from service in WWII, they lived in several Southwest Georgia towns before moving to Dekalb County to begin high school teaching jobs. After her retirement, she lived in Avondale Estates and then Arbor Terrace on Winn Way. She cherished her students, fellow teachers, friends and family. She is survived by her children Wayne Eley, Jane and Rick Kay, Ann and Harry Randolph, Dot Poss, Bill Eley, and Mary Haley, and her eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Her surviving South Georgia family includes Bernice and Kenneth Craft; Albert and Judy Newberry; Nell, Ann, and Pat Newberry; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
