Alvin Button

April 6, 1943 — December 31, 2022

Alvin Button, 79, of Marietta, Georgia passed away from Covid with underlying medical issues on December 31, 2022 with his family by his side.

Alvin grew up on the west side of Chicago to parents Helen Button and Isadore Goldstein. His mother was a general surgeon and his father, a child of immigrants from Vilna, Lithuania circa 1880s, was a criminal trial attorney. His lineage included Button Gwinnett, a Declaration of Independence signatory.

Alvin earned his BA from Beloit College before moving to Atlanta in the 1970’s to attend law school where he earned his JD from Woodrow Wilson College of Law and ML from Atlanta Law School. He worked professionally as a criminal defense and personal injury attorney in the Cobb County court system for 30 years and was an active member of the Cobb County Bar, Cobb County Trial Lawyers Association, and Georgia Trial Lawyers Association.

As a teenager Alvin was drawn to France. He lived in the Loire Valley in France where he learned the French language. He further immersed himself in French culture by joining a parachuting crew in Nantes, France where he leaped from a plane 13 times. At the time of the Algerian War he witnessed Charles de Gaulle suppress an attempted Duetsch takeover. He was able to see Edith Piaf in one of her last performances at the Paris Olympia. Among the many countries he traveled he was able to spend several months as a student at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon.

Alvin’s interests and hobbies included collecting resin and diecast 43rd scale European model cars, geopolitics, French language and culture, and ethnic and sub-national identities. However, he considered his American heritage of special importance.

Alvin is survived by his spouse, two children, brother and sister-in-law, and a nephew and niece.
