Amy Riser Harrington Humphrey

Amy Riser Harrington Humphrey, late of Decatur, GA, died February 25, 2012 in Livermore, CA. Amy was born and raised in Monroe, NC, the only child of Doss and Elberta Riser Harrington. She graduated from Duke University in 1940 and taught high school in Kannapolis, NC and Spartanburg, SC before marrying C. F. Humphrey in 1946. He predeceased her in 1997. Amy and Fay began their family in Decatur, GA and later lived in Lynchburg, VA before returning to Decatur where they realized their dream of owning their own business. Together they operated Humphrey's Vista Grove Hardware on LaVista Rd. in DeKalb County for many years. Amy moved to California to be near family in 2005. Amy was a popular speaker on the history of Christmas ornaments and ran one of the first Christmas shops in the Atlanta area. An enthusiastic reader, she possessed a keen interest in American history and current affairs. Amy's belief in the duty of active citizenship included involvement in a range of political and community affairs. She was a longtime member of Decatur First United Methodist Church, where she held numerous leadership positions and was a popular Sunday school teacher. Family and friends will remember Amy as a gracious Southern lady who lived an active faith of nonjudgmental compassion and care for others. Amy loved her children and grandchildren deeply and was proud of their accomplishments. Her daughter-in-law, Kathy, and son-in-law, Jim, held very special places in her heart. Survivors include a son, C. John Humphrey and his wife, Kathy, of Livermore, CA; daughter, Keren M. Humphrey of Rockwall, TX; grandchildren Brittany, John, Tara, Elizabeth and David; and six great-grandchildren: Manuel, Sophia, Grace, Hunter, Will, and Jack. Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 10th. at Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, GA. Visitation will be on Friday, March 9 between 4pm-7pm at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, Decatur.
