Ann Marie Giambruno

March 8, 1931 — January 29, 2020

Ann Marie Giambruno passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, joining her recently deceased husband of 60 years, John Thomas Giambruno and her son John Lawrence.
Ann was born March 8, 1931 in Boston, MA to a loving mother and a strict Irish Boston police officer. She and her three sisters shared a bedroom in a small two-bedroom home in Boston. Later, their cousin came to live with them as well. After high school, Ann attended Anna Maria College and graduated with a degree in English. Upon graduation, her mother encouraged her “to get out and see the world”. Her first stop was Japan and the beginning of her teaching career working for the State Department teaching Elementary School. Her love of travel took her to Germany where she met her future husband John, a young Army engineer. The two of them traveled to many interesting places. They were able to share their travels with their four children while John was stationed in Korea and Germany with the U.S. Army. As an Army wife, Ann held down the fort raising the children during John’s twenty years of service, including two tours in Vietnam while all four children were all under the age of 9. Ann and John finally settled in Decatur, GA where Ann resumed teaching in the Decatur school system.
In addition to travel, Ann loved to read, watch old movies, and was an avid and competitive Bridge player. She loved to sing and was known to sometimes dance the Jitterbug on the family room floor to Johnny Mathis or Big Band songs with the children looking on. She was always interested in politics and was not bashful about letting you know her opinion. Ann never acknowledged whether she knew if the political pundits could actually hear her shouting at them from her family room chair.
She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church where she actively volunteered including singing in the Choir, Meals on Wheels, Bereavement support, Meals for Priests, and as a Eucharistic minister. When it became difficult to volunteer at church, she was very generous with her prayers – constantly letting us know she was praying for us all. We should all be comforted in knowing she is now up there interceding for us.
Ann is survived by daughter Mary Giambruno and wife Melissia, daughter Ginny Peacock and husband Wayne, daughter Cathy Giambruno, daughter-in-law Martha Giambruno, and grandchildren Wesley, Ellie, Nick, Elyse, Erin, Marcus, and Antonio. Ann is predeceased by her husband, John Thomas; her son, John Lawrence; her parents, Lawrence and Bridgette O’Sullivan; her sisters Eleanor Yienger, Virginia O’Sullivan, Mary Ryan; and her cousin John Sullivan.
Visitation and Rosary will be held at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur on Friday, February 14 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on February 15, 2020 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Decatur. Burial will be in Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. on Monday, February 17, 2020 at 9:30 AM.
The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you Agape Hospice Care with gratitude for the loving care and support Ann received in her last weeks.
