Ann Maxwell Phelps Collier, 78, of Stone Mountain GA died Saturday November 10 2012 at her home following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born In New York City New York May 10 1934, the third of seven girls born to Jean and Jack Phelps. Ann grew up in Decatur GA, graduating from Decatur Girl's High School in 1951. She attended Agnes Scott College and the Atlanta Division of the University of GA. She was a member of the First Baptist Church Decatur, GA.
She is survived by her husband of fifty nine years, Bob Collier and daughter, Beth Collier, Stone Mountain GA. Grandsons, Andy and his wife Michelle Collier, Townville SC, Danny and his wife Shea Collier, Acworth GA. Great-grandchildren Garnet and Cole Collier. Surviving sisters are Jane Phelps Catt, Waleska GA, Ellen Phelps King, Tucker GA, and Vivian (Bibi) Phelps and her husband Dick Gailey, Pittsburgh PA., sister-in-law, Mary Sam Collier Knight, Collierville TN and many nephews and nieces. Cousin Molly Ann Harvey Childers and many faithful families of Hayes and Earnest cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sons, Bobby and Billy Collier; sisters, Bettye Lee Phelps Douglas, Jean Earnest Phelps, and Susan Phelps.
Ann was a member of the "Sunshine Girls" and remained active until Alzheimer's made it impossible for her to participate. The family would like to acknowledge the following special friends in her life: Dona Barrett Ansley, Marijo Yaun Culwell, Barbara Burdick Delong, Nancy Armstrong Dickey, Lu Ann Armstrong Dippy, Audrey Buck Hardin, Fran Spalding Lessen, Marilu Hurt McCarty, Shirley Hanson Overstreet, Mary Jean McMichael Pierson, Ann Richards Wood, Jo Ann Dodson Scott (deceased), Janot Smith Sauerbrey and Elizabeth Rubie Wells.
Ann retired from Egleston Children's Hospital after 38 years of service from August 16, 1961 to November 27, 1999. She worked as a Unit Secretary, Unit Manager, and Patient Advocate. The following group remained close even after Ann became sick - Terrie Angelich, Lynne Catterton (deceased), Vickie Dearing, Bonnie Elliott, Monya Humphries, Jeannette Hunt, Helen Piehl and Rebecca McCune.
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Decatur GA at 1 p.m. on Tuesday December 18, 2012 . Visitation will be held in the parlor of the church at 2 p.m.
