Edward O. Travis Sr., 85, and Anne Bacon Travis, 83, died in their home in Avondale Estates on July 15, 2009. Born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, Edward was the son of Edward L. Travis and Anne Kitchin Travis. He attended Virginia Episcopal School at Lynchburg, VA and North Carolina State University at Raleigh until April 1943, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He was a firefighter and served in France in WWII in 1945. His mother was furious he was made a fireman; she thought he should be a general! After the war, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh and took a position with the Mead Corporation, Chillicothe, Ohio. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Anne was the daughter of Philip Edloe Bacon and Hazel Stack Bacon. She attended London High School in London, Ohio, and graduated from Miami University with a degree in Economics. Edward Travis and Anne Bacon met in Chillicothe and they were married November 26, 1949 in London, Ohio. They moved to Greenville S.C. in 1955 where he joined Eastern Engineering. In 1958, they moved to Atlanta, Ga., where he continued working with Simons-Eastern until his retirement. Anne was a homemaker and held several part time jobs, including teaching needlework at Rich’s. After retirement, Ed and Anne enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time with family. He once said his proudest accomplishment was raising four children. He and Anne instilled a sense of responsibility and the value of education in them all. They were devoted to each other through a 60 year marriage. The family attended the Cathedral of St. Philip, In their years of retirement, Anne and Ed attended Holy Trinity Church in Decatur. Ed was known for his diplomacy, his sense of duty, his quiet creativity and inventiveness, his thriftiness. He loved the outdoors and nature, especially the long walks on the beach, swimming and floating in the ocean. He also loved canoeing, woodcarving and making wine. In recent years, he was regularly seen walking his dog around the neighborhood at the crack of dawn. Anne enjoyed singing in the church choir and volunteering with the Decatur Christian Ministry. She was also skilled in many kinds of needlework, including knitting, needlepoint, and embroidery. Anne valued the art of writing, and had absolutely perfect handwriting her entire life. Her pound cake was a family tradition. They are survived by their four children, Kit Travis Muehlman of Seattle, WA, Mary B. Travis of Decatur and her husband, Rik Hodge, Edward O. Travis of Austin, TX and his wife, Ann Benners Travis, Sue M. Travis of Iowa City, IA, and her husband Andy Robertson, and grandchildren, Anne Mariah Muehlman, Travis Hodge, Raymond Muehlman, Parker Hodge, Kelly Robertson, Sarah Robertson, Kate Travis, and Mary Travis, and Anne’s sister, Mary Bacon Alexander of Dallas, TX. They are predeceased by her brothers Tom Bacon, John Bacon, Phil Bacon and Dick Bacon, and son-in-law Daniel Muehlman. A memorial service is planned for Monday, August 10 at 2 pm at Holy Trinity in Decatur.
