Anne Renfroe Hughes

January 16, 1944 — June 19, 2018

Anne Hughes died on June 19, 2018 at Budd Terrace due to complications from long-term paralysis. She is survived by her loving son, Matt Hughes of Alabama, and her devoted sisters and brothers-in-law, Sue and Frank Tetterton of Lawrenceville, and Jean and Jerry Eickoff of Decatur. Nieces and nephews include Ashley Tetterton of Lawrenceville, Courtney and Alex Tetterton of Johns’ Creek and their children Hudson, Henry and Presley, Kim Eickoff of Denver, Kelly and John Holyoak of Decatur and their children Christian and Shane, Brent and Renee Eickoff of Decatur and their children Brent, Trace, and Axel.
Anne was raised in Decatur by her loving parents, Dr. Carl and Mae Renfroe. She attended Oxford College in Covington, GA, and Emory University. Ms. Hughes taught school for 5 years in Griffin and Atlanta as well as the Albuquerque Public Schools and one year in Thomson, GA. She completed her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education in March of 1978. Soon after suffering a tragic accident that left her paralyzed, Ms. Hughes was offered a job with Georgia Power and for 20 years worked in Customer Service until retiring in 1998. In 1986 Ms. Hughes became the first runner-up for Ms. Wheelchair Georgia. In 1996 she volunteered as a Field Marshal for Opening and Closing ceremonies at the Atlanta Olympic Games. She was a member of the Handicapped Task Force of Decatur First United Methodist Church, and there, for many years, taught 2nd Grade Sunday School. While at Budd Terrace Anne continued her love of writing poems and books, much to the delight of friends and family. Love of God and perseverance in faith best describe Anne’s life journey.
