Anne Walker West

April 17, 1924 — May 24, 2013

Anne Harvill West, 89, of Atlanta, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Little Lot, Tennessee, on April 17, 1924, Anne was a graduate of Columbia High School in Columbia, Tennessee, and Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois. After receiving a degree in speech therapy, she moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. There she met the love of her life, William Hodges Burr West, who was working as an assistant football coach under General Robert Neyland at the University of Tennessee. Thus began her lifelong love of UT football.
Anne and Burr moved to Atlanta in 1955, and she made friends with several women who later became known as The Bridge Club. They remained close friends, playing bridge and going on beach trips for more than 45 years. Anne and Burr joined Shallowford Presbyterian Church, where Anne immediately became involved in a women's circle and other activities and ministries. They joined Berkley Hills Country Club and enjoyed playing golf for many years.
Anne served as a member of the steering committee that created the DeKalb Junior Golf Association which became the Atlanta Junior Golf Association before evolving into the American Junior Golf Association. Anne was an active ALTA tennis player, playing with a team of friends from Berkley Hills and remained close to her Tennis Team friends. A favorite of teachers and students alike, Anne worked as a substitute teacher at Lakeside High School in DeKalb County for more than 25 years.
Anne's spirit lives on through all the lives she touched. She is survived by her three children: Betty West Hoye (Randy), Bill West, and Lou West (Anne); three grandchildren, Patrick Hoye (Ashley), Walker Hoye, and Will West. A very special Gee to her grandsons and to many others, she was especially proud of her first great-grandson, Patrick Hodges Hoye, Jr. She also was surrounded in love by 14 nieces and nephews, 14 great-nieces and nephews, and six great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walker and Alta Harvill; her husband, Burr; and her five sisters: Blair, Liz, Dot, Georgia, and Carolyn.
The celebration of Anne's life is Sunday, June 2, at 3 p.m. at Shallowford Presbyterian Church, 2375 Shallowford Road, NE, Atlanta, GA 30345. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Great Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts be made in Anne's memory to Shallowford Presbyterian Church.
