Antoinette Smith

January 31, 1910 — September 11, 2009

Antoinette “Toni” Smith of Decatur died September 11, 2009.   Toni was born on January 31, 1910 in Thomaston, Georgia to Nettie and J. Fain Johnson.   Toni moved to Decatur in 1928 and attended the Atlanta Conservatory of Music.   She met and married Paul M. Smith, a Decatur native.   Toni was a devoted Mother and Grandmother and will be remembered for her “spunk” and zest for life.   Toni was a long time member of the Decatur First United Methodist Church where she was an active member.   She was President of the Junior League of Dekalb County.   In 2001 she was awarded the “Louise Martin Klaube Award” for distinguished service.    Toni was a member of the Baron Dekalb DAR., a First Vice President of the Decatur High School PTA, and a member of the Atlanta Youth Symphony.   Toni is survived by her son, Paul Mayson Smith, Jr. and his wife Caro , of Marietta, Georgia; her grandson Paul Mayson Smith III, his wife, Jennifer, and their children Hayden and Davis of Roswell, Georgia; and her granddaughter Kathrine  Smith Kinsey, her husband, Harvey, and their children Patrick and Mia Caroline of Sandy Springs, Georgia.     Toni had four brothers, Roy Johnson, George, Fred, and Carl Moore, and two sisters, Katharine Roberts and Etta Cornwell, who all predeceased her.   Her nieces and nephew were Verdery Cunningham, Toni Floyd, Katharine Dennison, Ben Roberts, and those who predeceased her, Frances Smith, Ann Boyd, and Becky Bullington.   Services will be held Tuesday, September 15, 2009  at the Decatur First United Methodist Church with visitation at the church one hour before the service.  Officiating will be Dr. David Naglee with A. S. Turner Funeral Home handling the arrangements.    In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Decatur First United Methodist Church, 300 E. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, Georgia 30030, or to the United Methodist Childrens’ Home, 500 S. Columbia Drive, Decatur, Georgia 30030.
