It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Aristides G. Poulos, on September 4th, 2021at the age of 92 after a long and fulfilling life.
Mr. Poulos was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 19th, 1929. The family settled on Capitol Avenue in Atlanta with his older sister, Themis Poulos Cramer with other extended family and fellow Greek immigrants living in adjacent homes and nearby.
As a teenager, Mr. Poulos often helped his father at the family-owned grill known as “George’s” where they met and served the wonderful people of the dynamic area surrounding Forsythe and Alabama Streets in downtown Atlanta. These experiences included many interesting stories with Ralph McGill, Jack Spalding, Celestine Sibley of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, and Richard Rich of the legendary department store, Rich’s.
Mr. Poulos attended James L. Key “grammar” School, Druid Hills High School, and Georgia State University where he earned an undergraduate degree in Business Administration. As a life-long member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, he attended the Greek School and became fluent in the Greek language while learning the history, language, music and religion of his Greek Heritage.
Mr. Poulos served in the Korean War from 1951 -1952 with the Seventh Division Ordinance Corp and was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant First Class. He earned three Brown Service Stars or Engagement Stars for participation in certain military campaigns of the Korean War
After graduation from college, Mr. Poulos ran the family liquor business for many years until he retired to focus on Real Estate Investments.
In 1984, Mr. Poulos married Mary Catherine Hickey of Atlanta, GA. Together, they enjoyed travelling the world both privately as well as through Friendship Force International, a not-for profit that Mr. Poulos was dedicated to as it allowed opportunities to explore new countries and cultures from around the world.
Mr. Poulos was life-long member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He was active in AHEPA and the Saint Katharine Fraternity. Mr. Poulos earned a Brown Belt in Karate in 1971.
