Dr. Asa Alan Humphries, Jr., born September 6, 1924 in Anniston, Alabama to Anna Myree Adamson Humphries and Asa Allen Humphries, passed away on March 15, 2008 in Lexington, Kentucky. Graveside services were held in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Humphries, a much loved father, husband, brother, and son, also served in World War II and, after completing graduate work at Princeton University, went on to teach in the Biology Department at Emory University from 1954 to 1981-serving as Chairman of the Department from 1974 onwards. In 1981, he moved to Kentucky to become Dean of the College at Transylvania University. He retired from this position in 1991. Survivors include his wife, Laurie Humphries; sister, Julia Smith; children, Susan Gaddis, David Humphries, Ann Shaw, and Catherine Brown; grandchildren, Ryan Gaddis, Andrew Shaw, Daniel Shaw, and Olivia Humphries; and nieces, Holly Korschun and Nancy Zimmerman. Dr. Humphries was preceded in death by his first wife, Lanelle Wright Humphries, and his sister, Virginia Weaver. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Transylvania University's William T. Young Scholarship program, which provides full four-year tuition and fees support for a select group of incoming students annually. A. S. Turner & Sons
