Asiemoula "Mama P" Papadopoulos fell asleep in the Lord in her motherland of Greece on July 19, 2017. Her and her husband, John, founded Athens Pizza in Putnam, Connecticut in 1966 then moved to Atlanta and opened up the first Athens Pizza in Decatur on July 26, 1977. She was the beloved adopted mother of everyone in the Greek community, and by extension, every single one of her customers that walked in the restaurant. Walking in to Athens Pizza was like coming to eat at her home and that's how she treated everyone - with that ever glowing and hypnotic smile, laugh and caring, that only she could portray. She will be dearly missed by all who crossed paths with her and had the honor of knowing her, even if it was just meeting her for the first time as she greeted you when you walked into her restaurant.
She is survived by her three sons, Diamondis, Romilos, and Sandy; three daughters-in-law, Evie, Jeannette, and Niki; seven grandchildren, John Paul, Pia, Melanie, Theo, Tony, Katerina and Asimina; and many more loving family and friends.
The family will receive friends at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday August 1 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm with the Trisagion Prayer Service at 7:30. pm. Her funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday August 2nd at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to the following charities:
