Augustus Currie Monroe

November 20, 1918 — December 1, 2011

Augustus Currie Monroe, who served his country and his community as a civil engineer, died Dec. 1. He was 93. Mr. Monroe was born in Eagle Springs, North Carolina, in 1918, to Fullar Monroe and Nina Currie Monroe. After graduating from West End High School, Mr. Monroe attended Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton NC, now part of St. Andrews College in Laurinburg NC. After graduation, he moved to Gainesville FL, where he worked in an aunt's boarding house while earning in 1942 a degree in engineering from the University of Florida. During World War II, Mr. Monroe joined the Army Corps of Engineers and was assigned to the Mississippi River Commission in Vicksburg MS. He soon transferred to other engineering responsibilities in Atlanta. He married in 1946 a fourth-generation Atlantan, Winifred Louise Black, at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Mr. Monroe volunteered for many duties at the church and served as treasurer, deacon and elder. As a civil engineer with the Army and later the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Monroe traveled the world, working in Africa, Ascension Island and the Philippines. He served for a year in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Mr. Monroe also worked weekends as a private land surveyor. He surveyed vast tracts of undeveloped woodland that later became major subdivisions and schools throughout DeKalb and Fulton counties. Mr. Monroe retired in 1973 from the U. S. Civil Service. Two years later, he joined the Water and Sewer Department of DeKalb County, where he rose to the position of Deputy Director. He retired after 14 years with DeKalb. Mr. Monroe was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, and by his younger brother, Walter, of Eagle Springs. Mr. Monroe is survived by his son, Douglas Monroe, of Brooklyn NY; daughter, Trisha Monroe Campbell of Lilburn; grandchildren, Matthew Monroe and his wife Jennifer Hope of Philadelphia PA, Caroline Monroe Boyd and her husband Joseph Boyd of Monroe GA, Elizabeth Campbell Jones and her husband Austin Jones of Loganville, Rebecca Campbell Smith and her husband Jacob Smith of Lilburn; great grandsons, Ethan and Wyatt Smith of Lilburn, and Owen Jones of Loganville. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 5, at Melwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. Monroe's memory to First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, 1328 Peachtree Street, Atlanta GA 30309. The family will receive friends 4-6 Sunday evening at A. S. Turner & Sons.
