Commissioner B. Gordon Swyers, Jr. was Promoted to Glory on Monday, January 4, 2016. He was a graduate of Grady High School in Atlanta and Georgia State University, where he received a BA in Finance. In 1959, he was commissioned as an officer in The Salvation Army, as a member of the Pioneers session. He, along with his wife, Commissioner Jacqueline Swyers, held several appointments of distinction in the Southern Territory, including Divisional Commander of the Arkansas/Oklahoma Division, the National Capital and Virginia Division and the Texas Division, as well as Territorial Secretary for Personnel and Territorial Chief Secretary. They were also assigned to International Headquarters in London, England, as the International Secretary for Administration and International Secretary for Women's Ministries for the South Pacific and East Asia Zone.
In retirement he found great pleasure in gardening, assisting The Salvation Army with various projects, and the Atlanta Braves. But his greatest joy was in spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; three daughters, Eunice Harwell and her husband, Hank, Elizabeth Kinzie and her husband, Ben, and Elaine Canning and her husband, Philip; grandchildren, Abbey and Jackson; one sister Eunice Herndon and her husband, Gary; and two brothers, John Swyers and his wife, Sondra, and Philip Swyers and his wife, Pat.
A. S. Turner & Sons are assisting the family. Visitation will be Monday, January 11, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. at the Atlanta Temple Corps. The funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m., with Commissioner James Osborne presiding and Commissioner David Jeffrey officiating. The Committal Service will follow at Westview Cemetery, with Commissioner Philip Needham presiding and Lt. Colonel Ed Laity officiating.
