Barbara (Bobbie) McGee Friel, 68, of Dunwoody died Monday, December 6, 2010. Bobbie was born on January 23, 1942 in Macon, Ga. She worked for the Department of Family and Children Services in Macon after graduating from high school. At age 23 she transferred to State Defacs in Atlanta where she was the Secretary for the Director of the then new food stamp program. It was there that she met her husband of 45 years, Robert Friel. She then chose to stay home and raise her two children, Angie and Brian. When the children were in grade school she accepted a job as a teacher’s aide at Christ the King Catholic School. Eventually, she became the secretary to the school principal. She then transferred to the Georgia Bulletin, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, where she worked as office manager. In addition she worked as a supervisor at the Archdiocese’s Catholic Charities. Bobbie was a born caregiver and excelled at interpersonal communication. She was happiest in life when giving to others. Surviving are her husband, Robert; daughter, Angie; son, Brian; sister, Gloria Capel; of Griffin and brother, Kenneth Roberts of Washington, DC. A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, December 10th at 10:30 AM at the Cathedral of Christ the King. Father Frank McNamee, celebrant. Interment will be held at Georgia National Cemetery at 1:30PM. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made in Bobbie’s name to Catholic Charities or the Georgia Center for Positive Aging.
