Barbara Ellen Brown, b. January 8, 1956; d. September 27, 2011. Barbara was born and raised on Long Island, in East Meadow, New York. She graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She moved to Atlanta in 1978 and earned an MBA degree in International Business from Georgia State University and a Juris Doctor degree from Emory University Law School. She retired from DeKalb County government service and was engaged in private law practice. She was a volunteer advocate for children in the DeKalb County court system. Barbara loved music and played cello in the Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra. She was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Fagan Shapiro, and her father, Sol Shapiro, both of East Meadow, NY. She is survived by her husband, James Brown; sons Caleb, Luke, and Jacob, of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Christine Brown and their son Brandon, of Tallahassee, FL; step-daughter Sarah McMurray, of Los Angeles, CA; and brother Arnold Shapiro, of East Meadow, NY. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta, 1911 Cliff Valley Way, Atlanta, GA 30329. The church parking lot is only accessible from the Northbound Access Road of I-85, between the North Druid Hills Road and Clairmont Road exits. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Barbara's memory may make donations to the Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra, 4102 Barr Circle, Tucker, GA 30084.
