Barbara Ferneyhough Coston Moore

March 7, 1938 — February 17, 2017

Barbara Ferneyhough Coston Moore broke the bonds of dementia and went home on February 17, 2017.

Barbara was born to parents Dallam and Anna Ferneyhough on March 7, 1938 in Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond and from Longwood College in Farmville, Va. She later earned her Master's Degree in Education at The University of Georgia.

While teaching in Maryland, she met Michael Coston on a double-date. They married, and as an Army wife, she dutifully followed her husband around the country. She gave birth to three children, and bravely stood by her husband's side when he suffered a life-threatening skull fracture in a jeep accident.

The young family settled in Stone Mountain in 1973, where Barbara taught third grade for 30 years at Forrest Hills and Cedar Grove Elementary Schools. During her career, she became a popular teacher for both students and parents alike. Known as a tough, old-fashioned teacher, she demanded much from her students, but also brought humor and a hug to each and every child, no matter their circumstances.

After her first marriage ended, Barbara met and fell in love with Glenn L. Moore. They married in 2002 and for the next 15 years, Glenn showered her with the love and affection she so richly deserved. After she retired from teaching, she and Glenn traveled to the places she loved, including the beach at Cape Hatteras, N.C. and the North Georgia Mountains.

Barbara's sense of humor rivaled any comedian, but it was also her faith in God and compassion for others for which she'll forever be remembered. If she saw a need, she tried to meet it for friend and stranger alike. The lives she touched are too many to count. She would entertain at the drop of a hat, and quickly made friends and fans no matter where she went.

She was also a stubborn force to be reckoned with. When given the dementia diagnosis she dreaded, she gave it the middle finger salute and bravely marched through every stage of the disease. Even as her memory faded, her feisty humor and compassion remained intact.

Per Barbara's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Before her mind succumbed to the ravages of dementia, she adamantly threatened to haunt her husband and children if any of them tried to hold a funeral or memorial service for her.

She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn Moore, brother Dallam Ferneyhough, son Timothy Coston, son David Coston, daughter Lisa Coston, and her four grandchildren who gave her the greatest delight: Miranda, Delilah, Vaughn, and Zander.
