Barbara Harbour Bookout Brice, 81, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019. She was born at Emory Hospital, December 29, 1937, to the late Henry Wade and Robert Jester Harbour Bookout. Barbara grew up on Lenox Road when it was merely a dirt road.
An Atlanta native, she attended Garden Hills Elementary and graduated from North Fulton High School. Throughout her childhood and teenage years, her life revolved around ballet. She danced with the Atlanta Ballet under the founder, Dorothy Alexander.
While studying at Emory University, she met and fell in love with medical student, Anton Brice. She enjoyed telling the story of the Sigma Chi brothers serenading her outside her dorm room window once she and Anton were pinned.
After their marriage in 1959 they built a life together in Decatur, GA. Their focus was on raising their children and creating a loving, nurturing home. Barbara was involved in supporting her children in everything from Girl Scouts to PTA, to swim team to tennis camps, and beyond.
She will be remembered as an avid gardener, a dear friend to many, and a spiritual lady. She lived her faith daily.
She was an active member of North Decatur Methodist Church and more recently University Heights Methodist Church.
She will be lovingly remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and exceptional grandmother known as “Geese” or “Granny Goose” by her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Anton Brice, Jr.; son, Alan Brice and his wife, Jackie, of Suwanee; daughter, Kristen Tavel and her husband, Sam Brown; grandchildren, Mitchell and Anna Rose Brice, Christopher Tavel and his wife, Laura Colbert, and Nathan Tavel and Graham Tavel; and many more loving family and friends.
While we here have lost an angel who will be missed dearly, Heaven has greeted one with open arms.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019, at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2019, at University Heights Methodist Church, Decatur.
