Barbra Forrest Overton

September 8, 1937 — April 14, 2016

Barbra Overton created a home of love and acceptance. Throughout her children's lives, they witnessed friends and family come to her when they could not speak to anyone else. The daughter of Paul and Grace Forrest, Barbra Jo was born on September 8th, 1937 in Cumming, Georgia. She was exuberant and always had a joie de vivre for life. After graduating from North Georgia College, Barbra was a teacher in Griffin, Georgia. She became a local celebrity when her "How I lost 113 pounds" article was published in the Ladies Home Journal. Barbra loved that she and Jackie Kennedy both had articles in the same magazine. A co-worker introduced her to William Overton, and they were married four months later. Throughout their 52 years of marriage, Barbra perfected the art of hosting parties. She was known for her food and fabulous presentation. There were as many pictures of the food and the table décor, as the actual guests. Over the last few days, many friends from elementary to present day have shared with us that they thought of Barbra as their second mom. Her family is heartbroken over her unexpected passing, but knows she is overjoyed to be reunited in heaven with her husband, Bill. When Bill passed away last July, Barbra started seeing orange butterflies. She told us that it was dad checking on her. We know Mom will send us a sign that she is okay, and it will be bright, sparkly, and fabulous just like her. We will be celebrating Barbra's life at AS Turner and Sons in Decatur. Visitation is 4-7 on Wednesday, April 20th and the service is 1 pm on Thursday. Left to cherish her spirit is her children, Paula Overton Haynes of Alpharetta, Will and Barbara Overton of Atlanta, and Laura Overton of Alpharetta. The lights of Barbra's life are granddaughter and grandson-in –law, Lacey Madison and Anthony Polk, and her great granddaughter, Aubree Anne. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Atlanta Food Bank 732 Joseph E Lowery Blvd NW, Atlanta 30318. A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home & Crematory.
