Berta Mae Gill Bowden

April 19, 1906 — May 3, 2011

Mrs. Berta Bowden, the former Berta Mae Gill, died May 3, 2011, at age 105, at her home in Decatur. She was the only child of John C. and Bertie Daniel Gill of Woodbury, where she spent her childhood and graduated from Meriwether County High School. She later moved to Atlanta and attended Southern Business College. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William A. Craig of Dahlonega and Tim Bowden of McDonough. Her daughter, Beverly Craig Kade, passed away on February 18, 2011. In 1937, she and her family moved to Decatur, where they all joined the Decatur First Baptist Church. At her death, she was the last member of the original Nell Carreker Bible Class. Mrs. Bowden was a retired Civil Service employee, and was a secretary in the Office of the Commanding General, U. S. Third Army at Fort McPherson. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William A. and Gaye Craig of Norcross; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren. The family would like to extend special thanks to Mrs. Bowden's longtime caregiver, Gloria Walker. The funeral service will be held 1 PM, Friday, May 6th, in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. The committal service will be at 5 PM in the Woodbury City Cemetery. For those desiring to do so, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P O Box 11454, Alexandria VA 22312. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM to 1 PM prior to the service at A. S. Turner & Sons, Decatur.
