Betty Claire Farmer Painter, age 88, of Decatur, GA died on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Betty was born in Stellaville, GA on August 23, 1925, and was the youngest of six children born to Henry Robinson Farmer and Clara Denny Farmer.
Betty graduated from Wrens High School in 1942. She moved to Atlanta and attended Marsh Business College. She went to work for the U.S. Public Health Service, Malaria Control in War Areas, which later became the Center for Disease Control, and then worked for many years at the DeKalb County Health Department in the Developmental Evaluation Clinic for children.
She met William Calvin Painter, Jr. (Bill) and they were married in May 1946. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before Bill's death in 2009. Together, they raised three daughters.
Betty was a member of the Junior League of DeKalb County and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Decatur and the Joy-Dunstan Sunday School class. Betty and Bill were frequent travelers, having visited many foreign sites and all 50 of the United States. Betty loved gardening and her yard was a constant source of pride and pleasure, having been featured in the Decatur Garden Tour.
In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by her five siblings, Henry Pierce Farmer, Louise Farmer Clements, George Denny Farmer, Virginia Farmer Eubanks and James Gordon Farmer.
Betty is survived by her three daughters, Betsy Painter Roberts (Haynes) of Atlanta, GA, Susan Painter (Rick Pariani) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Sally Painter of Portland, OR. She has seven grandchildren: Haynes Roberts, Jr. (Megan) of Sewanee, TN, Katie Roberts Morris (Whit) of Richmond, VA, Claire Roberts of Austin, TX, Allison Pariani of New York, NY, Mark Pariani of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and Henry Fortier and Riley Fortier, both of Portland, OR. She also has three great-granddaughters, Millie and Jane Roberts and Betsy Morris.
A private graveside service will be held on Friday, June 6 at the Decatur Cemetery. A memorial service will take place at The First Baptist Church of Decatur on Monday, June 16 at 11:00 A.M. The family will receive visitors at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur on Sunday, June 15 from 4-6 P.M.
The family would like to thank NurseCare of Buckhead, especially Gloria Borro and Jimmy Ricks, for their care of Betty in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Decatur or a favorite charity.
