Betty Eve Higgs

Betty Barber Higgs was born in the Kirkwood section of Atlanta on Dec. 24, 1929 and passed away on Feb. 1, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Howard Higgs, her mother, Olive Powell Barber and sister, June Barber Bell and brother, Jimmy Barber, and son David Higgs. Betty is survived by her son Donald Higgs of Atlanta and nieces and nephews. She was a 1947 graduate of Girls High. She retired from Connecticut Mutual Insurance Company after 27 years. In 1950 she married W. Howard Higgs and after living in Richmond, Virginia for several years and upon Howard's death, returned to family in Atlanta. She worked at Sagamore Hills School as cafeteria cashier for a number of years. Fondly, the children remember her as the money lady. Betty and Howard joined Clairmont Hills Baptist Church in 1950, one week short of being charter members. At CHBC she was active in the Dorcas Sunday School class, headed the decorations committee for many years and sang in the choir and trio. Having served with joy and faithfulness she will be dearly missed by her church. The family would like to acknowledge the extraordinary care given to her by the medical staff at Emory University Hospital. A memorial service will be held at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, 1995 Clairmont Rd., Decatur, Georgia 30033, on Tuesday Feb.5, 2013, at 2pm with visitation at 1pm. Officiating will be the Rev. Larry Burgess and Pastor Fred Pitts. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Betty Higgs may be made to Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, 1995 Clairmont Rd, Decatur GA 30033.
