Betty Swofford Turner died Monday, November 21, 2011, at the age of 83. She was born in Durham, North Carolina, spent most of her career in Tennessee and moved in 2008 to Wesley Woods Towers in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her undergraduate degree from Greensboro College and a Masters degree from Duke University. She was a retired member of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church and an accomplished musician who taught and served as Minister of Music at several Methodist churches during her career. She also served as the Administrator of Asbury Acres Retirement Community in Maryville, Tennessee, for twenty years. Born January 11, 1928 and was married to Sterling DeLoy Turner in 1953, until his death in 2008. She is survived by her children, Ann Kimsey of Atlanta, Georgia, Sterling D. Turner, III of Maryville, Tennessee, Carol Turner of Smryna, Tennessee, and her granddaughter Hannah Turner of Maryville, Tennessee. The family asks that memorials, in lieu of flowers, be made to Glenn Memorial UMC, 1660 N. Decatur Rd, Atlanta GA 30307 or The Foundation of Wesley Woods, 1817 Clifton Rd, Atlanta GA 30329. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, 11AM, Saturday, December 10, 2011. There will be a reception after the service. A. S. Turner & Sons.
