Betty Moore Coleman

Betty Moore Jones Coleman, passed away on January 25, 2022. She was born in Bessemer, Alabama on August 14, 1932, the youngest daughter of Nathan Olious Jones and Ada Mae Clotfelter Jones. Betty was a graduate of Athens College in Athens, Alabama. Betty was a faithful member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church for over 50 years where she was a charter member of the Mariner's Sunday School class which joined with the Seekers class. She worked as one of the secretaries for Oak Grove, and she was also the administrative assistant to the North Georgia UMC Conference’s Bishops for 13 years. Betty will be most remembered as the “Butterfly Lady” since she wore a butterfly pin somewhere on her shirt or jacket. She was a much beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by her son, Steven and his wife Cathy, her daughter, Susan and her husband, Tom, her son David and his wife Laurie, and her other children: her niece Janie Hanlin Heath and her husband, Mike, and her nephew, Phillip Hanlin and his wife Sandy. Betty is also survived by her grandchildren: Scotty, Angela, Daniel, Nathan, Lindsey, Lindsey, Ethan, Ashley, Jared, Shannon, Leslie, Robert, Matthew, Amy, Sarah, Rudy, Natalie and Paul, and great-grandchildren, Braden, Malaya, Lana, Emily, Ethan, Caroline, John, David, and Desmond. Since Betty was the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters, her Jones’ nieces and nephews always held a special place in her heart.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church for the Ethridge Inclusive Playground.

Mrs. Coleman’s Celebration of Life service will be for her family and will take place at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 1722 Oak Grove Road in Decatur, on Friday, February 4, at 4pm.
