Billy LeRoy Lowry, of Atlanta, died February 3, 2013, one day short of his 90th birthday, at the V. A. Medical Center in Atlanta. A native of the town he loved, Billy was a graduate of Atlanta Boys High. He served his country during WWII as a Aerial Gunner of the 96th Heavy Bombardment Group of the Army Air Force and received the Purple Heart, and four Bronze Star medals, among other personal citations of distinction. On September 10, 1944, he survived being wounded as his plane was shot from the skies over Germany, becoming a prisoner of war. He was a POW from that fateful day until January 1945. In 1954, he graduated from the Southern College of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science degree. Billy received his Pharmacy degree in 1955 from Georgia State, and soon was employed at Redding's Drug Store in Decatur. For over thirty years, he served thousands of patrons at Redding's until his retirement in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erla Perry Lowry and son, William LeRoy "Billy" Lowry.
