Billy Roy Mears, age 88 of Dunwoody, GA, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and Roy Mears, and his wife of 46 years, Rhetta Y. Mears. Billy is survived by his son and daughter in law, Bradley Mears and Julie Stephens. Billy received his Bachelor's degree at Memphis State University, and his Master's Degree at the University of Alabama. He was a lifelong Methodist and longstanding member of St. James United Methodist Church. Billy retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Major, he was active in the Reserve Officers Association, and was a guidance counselor with City of Atlanta Schools for 40 years. Billy worked very closely with Mayor Andrew Young and Coretta Scott King on the City of Atlanta Dream Jamboree. He was a loving and kind man with a genuine zest for life. A graveside service will be held on Monday February 26, 2018 at 2:30 pm at Georgia National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday February 25, 2018 from 5pm until 7 pm at A.S. Turner and Sons. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Southwest Christian Hospice. A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
