Bruce Flanders Whittier, 81, of Stone Mountain, died in her home on Tuesday, October 16, 2007. Born in Macon, GA on August 29, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Edward Tarpley and Bruce Clecker Flanders. Mrs. Whittier earned her bachelors and masters degrees in Botany with honors from Florida State University, circa 1948. She then taught biology at Wesleyan College in Macon for four years. In 1954, she moved to Atlanta to work as a laboratory technician with the Georgia State Health Department. In 1957, she married Richard Nelson Whittier, rearing two daughters as a stay-at-home mother for 16 years. In 1974, she began a 22 year career at Emory University, first as a secretary in the Anatomy Department and then in the Child Psychiatry Department, from which she retired in 1996. Mrs. Whittier was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta and recently joined Eastminster Presbyterian Church after moving to Stone Mountain in 2006. She is survived by her husband of 50 years; daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Paul) Ellingson of Tucker and Carol (Mrs. John) Hardenburg of Portland, N.Y, and one grandchild, Rachel Ellingson. The memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, details forthcoming. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Mental Health America. A. S.
