Bruce Lee Meeks, 79, of Blairsville, GA passed away Thursday, January 14, 2010, due to an extended illness. Mr. Meeks was born June 7, 1930 in Lakeland, Florida, the son of Troy and Wanda Meeks. Following graduation from Manatee County High School in 1948, he entered the U. S. Navy and served aboard the USS Cutlass. Following 4 years in the Navy, Mr. Meeks attended the University of Florida. After graduation in 1956 he was employed by Bell South Telephone Company and retired in 1987. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his yard, as well as being a great “do-it-yourselfer”. During his retirement in the beautiful north Georgia mountains, he and his devoted wife of 56 years, the former Carolyn Meeker of Bradenton, Florida, enjoyed traveling with the Sunny Peaches group. Bruce was pre-deceased by his parents and only sibling Marinez Rideout. In addition to his wife Bruce is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Lori Meeks of Woodstock, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Marifae and Frank Jones of Avondale Estates, GA; and grandsons, Harrison and Parker Meeks of Woodstock, GA. Bruce was a loving, gentle man and was always very proud and devoted to his family and many friends. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA with Rev. Brad Greene officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr., Atlanta, GA 30319 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 1925 Century Blvd., N.E., Suite 10, Atlanta, GA 30345-3315. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday evening at A. S. Turner & Sons.
