Byron Matthews, 100, resident of Atlanta since 1948 died Saturday, Nov, 18, at Emory University Hospital. Born in Hanover, Alabama in 1916, he was raised in Birmingham and moved to Atlanta with his wife, Arlene (Judy) Culpepper Matthews and young daughter, Jan, on his return to civilian life after his service in the Navy during World War II. His entire career was spent with Retail Credit Co. (now Equifax Corp.). Byron was an avid traveler. His travels included the US, Canada, Mexico, both Western and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.
Byron was preceded in death by his first wife of 45 years, Judy, and by his second wife of 10 years, Harriet Ewing.
He is survived by his daughter, Jan and her husband, Joe and their two daughters: Emily Kropp and her husband, Ed, and their children Nell, George and James, and Caroline Abbott and her husband, Brian, and their children Henry, Oliver, and Lauren. He is also survived by his step daughter, Donna Ewing Leong and her husband, Dan, of Marietta and their two children Mark and Laura, and by step son, Kelly Ewing and his wife, Cathy, and their children, Anna and John of Atlanta and of Oak Grove UMC.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm Sunday, November 26, at Oak Grove UMC where Byron was an active member and contributor for upwards of 40 years. Dr. Amy Morgan and Rev. Mary Lou Gilbert will officiate. A reception will follow in the Great Hall of the Church.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Candler School of Theology, Development Office, Emory University Atlanta, GA 30322.
