C.E. Benefield, age 96, of Decatur, Georgia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 24, 2011. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, July 18, 1914, the third child of the late David Frank Benefield and Effie McEwen Benefield. Mr. Benefield has been in the real estate business for over 60 years and founded Benefield Realty Company. He was one of the founders and a charter member of DeKalb Association of Realtors where he served as President in 1959. He was also a charter member of Georgia Multiple Listing Service (GAMLS) and pioneered much of the residential development of DeKalb county and surrounding counties in the 50's and 60's. He has been a member of Pythagoras Masonic Lodge for many years. He has been an active member of First Baptist Church Decatur for over 65 years, serving as a Deacon as well as on numerous other committees over the years. He was a founding member of the Alert Sunday School class, which he was active in from its initiation until his demise. Mr. Benefield was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Sarah Ruth Sheppard Benefield, sons Jerry Wayne Benefield and David Lynn Benefield. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Caroline Edens Johnson Benefield, Decatur, sisters Ruby Patterson, Jackson, Georgia, and Marjorie Purdy, Seneca, S.C.; son Daniel Steven Benefield, (Chris), Tucker, GA; daughter Charlotte Benefield Lough, ( Keith), Placitas, NM; step-daughters Susan Johnson Settle, (Michael), Alpharetta and Ellen McBrayer, Atlanta; grandsons Brian Preston Benefield, Brandon Wayne Benefield; granddaughters Pamela Denise Butler (Scott), Ann Marie Horton(Scott), Heather Lynne Lough, Kristen Danielle Benefield, Brandy Nicole Benefield; step-grandsons James J. McBrayer, Watt Hardin McBrayer, and Adam Kyle McBrayer; step-granddaughters Stephanie Stephens Braatz, ( David), Wendy Stephens Williamson; great grandsons, Wesley Philip Horton, Corey Scott Horton, step-great grandson, Nathan James Williamson; great granddaughters, Sarah Blythe Butler, Kendall Marie Horton; step-great granddaughters Addison Leigh Braatz, Lina Caroline McBrayer. Services will be held at First Baptist Church Decatur, Sunday, February 27th at 3:00 P.M. with Dr. Peter Rhea Jones and Rev. Kurt Varney officiating. Interment Resthaven Gardens of Memory. The Alert Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. The family will receive friends Saturday from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. at A. S. Turner & Sons. (404) 292-1551.
