Calvin Harris Emmert

Calvin H. "Red" Emmert was born on September 4, 1925, one of five sons born to Jake and Ethel Emmert of Rice, Texas. As a red-headed, freckle-face farm boy, he soon acquired his nick-name as a football and track athlete at Ennis High School in Ennis, Texas (1942-1943). He volunteered for World War II as a 17 year old in June 1943 and served two years in the Navy in the South Pacific. From there he applied and received an assignment to the Navy Officers Candidate School and was assigned to school at Auburn University. While at Auburn he was a walk-on in football and received a four year scholarship, which was honored and completed in 1949 with a BS degree in Education. During this time he transferred from Navy ROTC to Air Force ROTC and received a commission as 2nd Lt. at the same time. He served in the Air Force Reserves for 30 years attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. Upon graduation from Auburn, he accepted a position with the Atlanta Board of Education in Georgia as a teacher and athletic coach at Roosevelt High School. During his 11 years he became head football coach, and the Roosevelt High yearbook was dedicated to him in 1959. He left the school system in 1960 to take a position with Fulton Federal Savings and Loan and retired as a VP for Real Estate and Loan Servicing after 30 years of service and employment. During this time, he was a high school football official for 20 years, serving as an officer of the Georgia Football Officials Association for four years, and member of the Atlanta Touchdown Club, serving as president in 1976. Mr. Emmert was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur. He is survived by his two daughters, Merrill Kennedy and Julie Emmert; his son-in-law, Louis Kennedy, his granddaughters, Sara Rosales, Leslie Kennedy, Laura Kennedy Halliday, and her husband Matt Halliday; and two great grandchildren, Ellie & Ian; brother, Cecil Emmert; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion, Juanita Marsh. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 2nd at 2:00 P.M. at Arlington Memorial Park. Dr. Peter Rhea Jones will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Southwest Christian Care, 7225 Lester Rd., Union City, GA 30291. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
