Floyd M. Johnston, Jr. of Atlanta, born August 24, 1929, passed away August 25, 2012 at Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta at the age of 83 after a brief illness. Floyd discovered a love of flying in Tyler, Texas where, at the age of 15, he swept the airport hangar and delivered morning newspapers to pay for his flying lessons. That love of flying continued until he was 58 years young. Floyd was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University, Class of 1951, and served as an Army pilot in Korea. He met the love of his life, the former Martha Ann French, a flight attendant on a flight from New Orleans en route to Houston. After moving from New Orleans to Atlanta, Floyd retired as a Captain with Eastern Airlines after 32 years of service. In addition to flying, he enjoyed boating and water-skiing. Floyd's basement workshop was where he delighted in working with his hands, whether it was repairing or building from scratch. He was at his best taking things apart and putting them back together even better than before. Floyd is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 54 years, Marty; daughters Jeri Ann Herman (Dave) and Jan Bray (Jeff); grandchildren Brandon, Jordan (Serina) and Spencer; great-grandchildren Jackson Thomas and Mason Monroe; a sister and her family. His first grandchild, Christopher, preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a memorial contribution in Floyd's name to The American Heart Association (www.heart.org). A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, September 2, 2012, at A.S. Turner & Sons (www.asturner.com) Chapel in Decatur with visitation for family and friends at 1:00 pm.
