“Teeter” Umstead, age 88 of Decatur, Georgia, member of Georgia Tech’s Athletic Hall of Fame died peacefully Thursday, October 11th, 2018. He was born December 5th, 1929 in Madisonville, Kentucky. Mr. Umstead graduated from Georgia Tech in 1952 where he was captain of the Georgia Tech basketball team and received many college honors. A veteran of the Korean War, he was a company commander in the artillery.
After his Army duty, he worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio, and later as an Industrial Products Fields Representative out of Wheeling, West Virginia.
He returned to Atlanta, Georgia in the late fifties and was in property and casualty insurance sales. He was one of the founders of Northlake Insurance Agency and retired from the insurance business with The Williams, Turner, and Mathis Agency.
He coached youth basketball and baseball for many years as a volunteer in different youth organizations. An avid tennis player, “Teeter” played tennis as often as he could with various ALTA and USTA teams.
Survivors include his wife Mary, his four children Cathy, Elizabeth, Corky, and Chip, his eight grandchildren Carl, Whitney, Mark, Kelly, Curtis, Alex, Nick, and Katelyn, his six great-grandchildren, his brother Tom Umstead and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 20th at 12:30pm at A.S. TURNER & SONS FUNERAL HOME. Reception to follow.
