Carl Vernon Rauschenberg, Sr., 96, formerly of Atlanta, died on Thursday, March 8, 2012 in Dalton, GA at the age of 96. He was the son of the late Malvin Lester Rauschenberg and Lillian Gobay Rauschenberg. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Iris Kerlin Rauschenberg; his brothers, Malvin Lester Rauschenberg, Jr. and Robert Lee Rauschenberg; and his son, Carl Vernon Rauschenberg, Jr. He is survived by his son, David Glenn Rauschenberg and daughter-in-law, Cathy Jones Rauschenberg of Dalton; his daughter-in-law, Verna Mobley Rauschenberg of Big Canoe; five grandchildren, Clifford Carl Rauschenberg of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert David Rauschenberg of Richmond, VA, Andrew Carl Rauschenberg of Seattle, WA, Samuel Jones Rauschenberg of Durham, NC, and Cabray Rauschenberg Marchman of Florence, SC; and two great grandchildren, Abigail Rauschenberg and Thomas Rauschenberg of Virginia Beach. He graduated from Emory Law School in 1937 and served 6 years on active duty during World War II. He remained in the Army Reserve for 26 more years and retired as a Colonel. After the war, he owned and operated a hardware store in Decatur, Georgia. In 1955, he became a real estate developer and home builder around the greater Atlanta area and retired in 1975. He was a member of Druid Hills Baptist Church in Atlanta since 1929, where he served as a Trustee, Deacon, and Deacon Emeritus. He also devoted many years to repairing, restoring, and maintaining the church building and grounds. In 2009, he moved to the Wood Dale Health and Rehabilitation Home in Dalton. The family greatly appreciates the loving care given to him at Wood Dale. The funeral service will be on Saturday, March 10th at 3:00 pm in the chapel at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA. Prior to the service, the family will have visitation from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Interment will follow the service at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, GA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Druid Hills Baptist Church, 1085 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30306.
