Mr. Carl William Kitchens, 83, of Atlanta, GA, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009. He was a graduate of Eastman High School, Eastman, Georgia. Mr. Kitchens graduated from Emory at Oxford in 1944 and received an appointment from the U. S. Congress to the Naval Academy. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to school and graduated from the University of Georgia with Masters Degrees in Accounting and Finance. He later received his CLU degree from Georgia State University. Mr. Kitchens “Bill” spent a life long career in the insurance industry employed as Ordinary Regional Manager for Independent Life and Vice President of Cigna-Re, where he retired. He gave his time and devotion to his Friendship class and to Wesley Haven at Briarcliff United Methodist. Bill was a current member in the Volunteer Men’s class at Briarlake Baptist Church. Mr. Kitchens was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Wylene Stuckey Kitchens of Eastman, Georgia. He is survived by his daughter, Jessica Carlene Putnam of Atlanta; grandsons, William Riley Putnam of Atlanta, Timothy Ryan Putnam and his wife Lindsey of Lawrenceville, GA; two lovely great grandchildren, Austin Riley Putnam and Tayler Marie Putnam of Lawrenceville, GA; a dearly loved brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Lucy Stuckey of Jesup, GA; and a very special friend, Mrs. Oreta Cook of Atlanta. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Briarlake Baptist Church with Dr. Tommy Ferrell officiating. A private family entombment is planned at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Briarlake Baptist Church, 3715 LaVista Rd., Decatur, GA 30033.
