Carlton Lewis Doane, Sr.

Carl Doane, recently of Cumming, GA passed away peacefully on Sunday August 6, 2017, at the age of 96. Carl was born on September 8, 1920 in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts to the late Henry and Thelma Chase Doane.

Carl is survived by his wife, Kathryn and their daughter, Linda Doane Smith and her husband, Gary of Cumming. His grandchildren include Ryan and Melissa Smith of NYC, Chad Smith of Cumming, Denny Doane and his family of Moultrie, GA; Nathan Doane and his family of Thomasville, GA; and his niece, Cindy Doane of Dennisport, MA. He was preceded in death by his son, Carl Doane, Jr. of Pavo, GA and his three siblings, Wallace, Stewart and Greta Doane all of Cape Cod, MA.

Growing up, Carl attended Ezra Baker Elementary School in Dennisport, MA; John Simpkins High School and Yarmouth High School in South Yarmouth, MA where he showcased his athletic abilities on both the baseball and basketball teams.

Once out of school, Carl was recruited as a Buck Sergeant in the Army to help form a baseball team for the forces and relocated to Atlanta. While in the service, he played short stop and went to the National Championship in 1944 on the Ordinance Depot Team

Following his service, Carl played pitcher for two years on the Waycross farm team in the Georgia-Florida league where he boasted a 12-2 record. Soon thereafter, he became very sick with Tuberculosis and returned home to Massachusetts. Before he left, Waycross gave him a ‘Carl Doane Day.”

In 1946, Carl tried out for the Boston Red Sox, but ultimately signed with the Atlanta Crackers baseball team later that year as a pitcher. In the late 40’s, Carl met his future bride, Kathryn Beaty of Pavo, GA, while they were both working in Decatur. The two wed in 1949 and soon after moved to Decatur, where they remained until relocating to Clarkston, GA in 1969. In 2016 Carl & Kathryn moved to Cumming, GA to be closer to their daughter, Linda Smith and her family.

Carl worked various jobs during his career including Belle Isle Motors in Decatur, Getz Exterminators and DeKalb Sporting Goods store where Louis Van Houten was the owner.

Besides playing baseball and basketball, Carl also played exhibition ping-pong at half time during high school basketball games and was an avid golfer. He and Kathryn became charter members of Fieldstone Golf Course in Conyers, GA in 1969 and played there until the course closed in 2004. He worked in the pro shop and as a marshal at Fieldstone. Carl and Kathryn formed many lasting friendships with fellow golfers.
