CAROL MARIE AUBIN
December 6, 1945 - August 28, 2014
Carol M. Aubin's delightful ability to look at life sideways, combined with her incredible facility with words, entertained her family and friends - as well as herself - and kept those around her laughing. Her love of words, music, animals and sports wove through the many different lives she lived. Carol was born in Wantage, England on December 6, 1945 to Pearl Richardson. With her German Shepherd, Rex, as a companion, Carol spent her childhood writing, listening to music, and loving the Royal family. She immigrated to the United States with her mother and sister in 1960, joining her adoptive father, Austin Aubin's family in Ausable Forks, New York. She worked very hard to lose her British accent, wanting the language of her new country. After high school, she became a radiological technician and then joined the U. S. Army, where she worked as a journalist, again finding a way to write. In 1972, Carol became a life-long Florida Gator when she attended the University of Florida on the GI bill and earned her degree in journalism. She was the first female Assistant Sports Information Director in the SEC, working at the University of Florida for eight years. During the heady days of feminism of the 1970's, Carol was a part of the Gainesville, FL feminist and lesbian-feminist community, including co-owning Amelia's Bookstore with Gerry Green for three years. Women's music provided the transition for her next move. She was selling music for Olivia records and moved with her German Shepherd, Susan B., to Atlanta in 1985. This chapter in Carol's life was first and foremost about being a mother to her two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarahmarie Aubin-Barrett. Along with Susan Barrett, she spent 27 years embedded in the world of family. She created her space in the larger Barrett family and fully embraced the world of parenting through numerous pot-lucks, swim meets, school events and family trips. Carol shared all of her funny perspective and her love of words, music and animals with her children. She wrote for the Arbor Newsletter, volunteered at swim meets, and co-hosted so many gatherings. Professionally, over the last decades, Carol was extremely successful at combining her writing and love of new technology into a career as a Certified Usability Analyst. She held her own as an older woman in a field typically dominated by young men. She was known at the company for her community spirit and her very funny and creative Halloween costumes. Because of Carol's work as a volunteer and as a creator of volunteer possibilities she received the esteemed National GXS 2010 Todd Hill Humanitarian Award. As her daughters became adults, Carol came full circle in weaving together the passages of her life. She visited family in Scotland and England, reconnected with members of the Aubin clan, and re-immersed herself in Florida Gators, women's sports, music and writing. She continued to volunteer and be active in progressive politics and women's issues, including walking the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Breast Cancer walk in 2011. When Carol was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2013, she tackled her fight with the same determination and independence that had carried her through so much of her life. And as always, she did so with humor, music, writing and her dear cat, Molly. Carol is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Aubin-Barrett, and Sarahmarie Aubin-Barrett and her family of friends, Gerry Green, Anne Mosely, Jan Smyth, Jana Jopson and Susan Barrett. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Atlanta Friends Meeting House in Decatur on Saturday, September 6th at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Paws Atlanta or to the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Society.
